Professional Development Director

Richards, Layton & Finger, Delaware's largest law firm, seeks a full-time exempt (or part-time, minimum 30 hours per week) Professional Development Director in Wilmington, DE.

About the Position

This is an excellent opportunity for an innovative self-starter to work directly with firm leadership to ensure the technical, professional and personal development of the Firm's attorneys. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of activities and responsibilities, including but not limited to following:

  • Analyze, plan, and manage the orientation, training and development activities for the Firm's attorneys.
  • Support and advocate for associates as a member of the firm's Associate Committee.
  • Work with department chairs and practice group leaders to advance group-specific training and experience goals.
  • Support the firm's diversity initiative as a member of the firm's Diversity Committee. Develop and maintain statistical reports.
  • Participation as a member of the firm's Pro Bono Committee.
  • Oversee the Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program, the mentor/buddy program, the evaluation process, and the Bar Examination process.
  • Select and recommend outside presenters and trainers.
  • Coordinate the development and organization of training materials, manuals, and presentations.
  • Work to maintain and improve morale, firm culture, and associate retention/experience.
  • Counsel and coach associates to improve their success and experience at the firm.
  • Conduct exit interviews and provide outplacement support to transitioning attorneys.
  • Develop, plan and lead associate meetings and team-building events.
  • Ensure own development through attendance and participation at industry associations and trainings.
  • Track, analyze and evaluate professional development and retention trends. Make related recommendations.

Qualifications include:

  • JD required.
  • Knowledge of attorney training and development, preferably gained in a law firm setting or through legal industry training.
  • Five to seven years of progressively more responsible work experience.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate with a diverse group of attorneys, staff and clients and provide information with ordinary courtesy and tact while safeguarding confidentiality.
