Murchison & Cumming, LLP is seeking an experienced Chief Financial Officer to join our Los Angeles office.
As a member of the senior staff leadership team, the CFO will be an advisor to the firm's Management Committee, evaluating and assisting with strategic planning and execution; financial performance management, including budgeting, profitability analysis and efficient management of WIP and A/R; promotion of optimal productivity across the firm, including analysis of monthly utilization reports and development of recommendations to maximize the use of underutilized resources.
Qualified Applicants Will Have:
The CFO will be a leader with at least 10 years of broad finance and managerial experience in a law firm.
Accounting or Finance Bachelor’s Degree required. MBA or advanced degree preferred.
CPA designation required.
Strong transactional and partnership tax accounting, financial analysis, IT system and process evaluation skills.
Extensive experience with budgets, forecasts and cash projections.
Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing to C-Level Management, and other internal and external parties in clear, concise manner.
Ability to delegate, instruct and evaluate staff members, including goal setting, performance review requirements and skill assessments.
In depth understanding and experience with ProLaw, Aderant or similar accounting software as well as Excel.
A collaborative and flexible style, with a strong client service mentality.
Responsibilities
- Strategy and Operational Planning
• Develop organizational strategies by contributing financial and accounting information, analysis, and recommendations to strategic thinking and direction.
• Establish functional objectives in line with organizational objectives. Evaluate trends, establish critical measurements, determine productivity strategies, design systems, accumulate resources, resolve problems, and implement change.
• Lead the preparation of the firm's annual operating budget to include billing rates, cash cycle and revenue, operating expenses and capital expenditures.
• Responsible for all of the general accounting services of the firm on a firm-wide and local office basis to include accounts payable and cash disbursements, cash management, cash receipts, client trust accounting, compliance with accounting procedures and controls, debt financing and equipment leading, expense reimbursements, expense reserves, financial statements, fixed assets, general ledger, month-end close, personal accounts and partner distributions.
• Oversee banking relationships for the firm including renewal and use of credit facility.
• Manage all accounting services on a firm-wide basis.
• Lead the client accounting services of the firm on a firm-wide and local office basis to include timekeeper guidelines and exception billing rates, time entry, and invoicing, client cost advances, prepayments, cash application, and collections.
- Financial Analysis and Reporting
• Direct all budgeting and financial analysis and management reporting services of the firm on a firm-wide and local office basis to include financial statements, financial presentations, attorney utilization reports, matter responsible partner reports, accounts receivable reports, actual vs. budget variance analysis and reports, analysis of office and practice group performance, financial information systems and profitability analysis.
• Promote and support alternative fee engagements including project management processes and related project budgeting, pricing, monitoring and reporting.
• Analyze potential mergers, acquisitions, or business partnerships.
